What is a Crown
A crown, also called a cap, is a hollow, artificial tooth used to cover a damaged or decayed tooth. When a tooth is compromised by decay or damage, your dentist may suggest a crown.
Crowns are used to restore both front and back teeth that have been broken or are at high risk of breaking, due to fractures or large/old fillings. You may also need a crown if you have a root canal, a large filling in a tooth, or a broken tooth. Crowns can also be used to cover a discoloured or misshapen tooth. There are a variety of materials used to design dental crowns. You and your dentist will determine which type is best suited for your particular need.
A crown restores and reinforces the tooth and protects it from further damage. A tooth that has been fixed with a crown looks and works very much like a natural tooth. It looks and feels close to your real tooth and blends seamlessly with your other teeth. Crowns also return the strength that you need for comfortable function, and to maintain a bright, white smile.
How is it done
- First Visit: During your first visit, a dentist will begin to prepare your tooth structure by taking a highly accurate, digital scan of your mouth using our iTero imaging scanner.
- Second Visit: Your dentist will ensure your custom crown is a perfect fit and then cement it in place.
- Next, a temporary crown is placed on your tooth. We then email the digital image of your tooth to a dental laboratory to create the crown.
iTero is a state-of-the art digital scanner that uses laser and optical imaging to digitally scan and capture the surface and contours of your tooth and gums. Not only ideal for patients with a gag reflex, it completely eliminates the need for the messy, traditional impressions done by placing unpleasant, thick putty into your mouth to create a mold.
This technology benefits patients by making it possible to see the image on the screen instantaneously and electronically forward to labs, meaning less time in the chair for patients, less time waiting for your crown, and overall more comfort.
