What is an apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure used to preserve your damaged teeth by removing inflamed or infected tissue from the roots, removing the very tip of the root itself. This procedure may accompany or substitute a root canal treatment if it could not sufficiently eliminate the infected tissue in your mouth on its own.

We will highly recommend an apicoectomy in Newmarket, ON, for an infected tooth, despite having undergone previous root canal treatment and often at least one root canal retreatment.

Further, this procedure may be necessary to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on X-rays but still cause pain in the tooth. We may also treat damaged root surfaces or surrounding bone with this procedure. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

How we perform the procedure

Enter our dental oasis and feel relaxed and at ease, knowing we will take care of our treatment with as minimal discomfort as possible. Our team will administer local anesthesia before we begin to help you avoid pain. There are four primary steps involved in the apicoectomy procedure:

  1. We make a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue.
  2. We remove the damaged tissue along with the end of the root tip, which is sealed by composite filling material to prevent the tooth’s root’s reinfection.
  3. We suture the gum tissue.
  4. We allow the bone to naturally heal around the composite root filling over months so your tooth can be restored to its full function.

Call or email us at Oasispark Dental to determine if an apicoectomy in Newmarket, ON, is the right procedure for you and to schedule one if needed. We look forward to welcoming you to our dental oasis!

    After the procedure

Since an apicoectomy may be more invasive than you are used to with a typical root canal surgery, it could result in more discomfort during recovery. Afterward, some swelling and soreness are very distinct, as long as it is not significant and seriously disruptive to your day-to-day life. We will likely recommend an over-the-counter painkiller or otherwise prescribe you a stronger option and an antibiotic.

Our team will usually remove stitches within two to seven days. Ultimately, you should notice any swelling or soreness you experienced after the apicoectomy to subside after approximately two weeks. The results of this procedure should be long-lasting, ideally for the rest of your life. If you notice any issues, do not wait to contact our team at Oasispark Dental and schedule a follow-up appointment.
