Visiting the dentist with your child

At the first pediatric visit in Newmarket, ON, we will give you and your child a tour of our entire dental office, including Mr. Thirsty (our suction tip), and let you take a ride up and down in the dental chair! We then invite parents to help us educate their little ones about positive dental practices—starting with lifelong habits for flossing, brushing, and nutrition, as well as sugar bugs!

Depending on his or her age, your child will sit in the dental chair, on a “booster,” or we can use the “lap-to-lap” technique during their appointment. Before treatment, we strive to establish a closer rapport to gain their confidence and overcome any apprehension. In the end, kids pick out a prize from our Treasure Chest as a reward for good behaviour.

Establishing their dental home

Establishing a “dental home” for your child will help your child receive appropriate, preventive, routine oral care. This is the ongoing relationship between dentist and patient, delivered in a comprehensive, continuously accessible, coordinated and family-centred way. You can help us make your child’s first visit to our dentist enjoyable and positive.

If old enough, tell them where they are going and explain that our dental team will answer any questions they may have. Try to refrain from using words that might cause fear, such as “needle,” “pull,” “drill,” or “hurt.” We strive to use words that convey the same message but are much more pleasant. Education

Primary teeth

Although all 20 primary teeth (i.e. baby teeth) usually appear by age 3, the pace and order of their eruption vary. It is vital to maintain good oral care of these teeth, as neglected cavities frequently lead to problems that affect developing permanent teeth. Permanent teeth should begin appearing around age 6.

Primary teeth are essential for:

  • Providing space for permanent teeth and guiding them to the correct position
  • Proper chewing and eating
  • Permitting normal development of the jaw bones and muscles
  • Affecting the development of speech
  • Improving appearance

Eating habits and good hygiene

While fluoride is beneficial to teeth, too little or too much can be detrimental. Little or no fluoride will not strengthen the teeth to resist cavities, while excessive fluoride ingestion can lead to dental fluorosis. Encourage your children to spit out fluoride toothpaste when brushing—and only give fluoride supplements to children upon the recommendation of a pediatric dentist near you.

In general, your child requires a well-balanced diet to achieve optimum oral health. Choose a variety of nutritious foods and limit snacks, which often lead to cavity formation. Encourage good oral hygiene to remove bacteria and leftover food particles that create cavities and brush older toddlers’ teeth at least twice a day. Furthermore, it is essential to visit the dentist routinely every six months to start your child on a lifetime of good dental health. Call our team today to book an appointment!
