Inlays and Onlays

What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays are a type of restoration on the rear teeth. They are usually required on teeth that have slight decay or that are fractured but are not severe enough for the need of crowns.

Inlays and onlays are perfect for patients who have a sufficient amount of healthy tooth remaining. Dental inlays are used to restore the surface or interior part of the tooth, where dental onlays are used to restore the cusp or entire biting surface of the tooth.

What are the benefits?

There are many benefits to inlays and onlays, one that they are durable and can last up to 30 years. They are able to preserve a good portion of your own tooth and prevent more dental treatment in the future, while strengthening your tooth as well.

The procedure

The dentist starts by removing the damaged part of the tooth while preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible. Exact, digital impressions are then taken so the new new tooth will fit perfectly. Impressions are electronically sent to a laboratory. When the inlays and onlays are complete, the dentist places them on your tooth, making sure that it is a good fit and comfortable.
