Bonding

What is bonding?

Bonding Bonding is a tooth-coloured resin (plastic) that can help repair a decayed, chipped, fractured or discolored tooth. Bonding, unlike veneers, can be done in one single visit without having to send anything to a lab. Just as the name sounds, the resin is bonded directly onto the tooth. It can protect the tooth from further damage and can be molded to blend seamlessly with your tooth while also feeling and looking just like your natural tooth. Bonding allows teeth to return the strength that you need for comfortable function and to maintain your all-white smile.

When is it used?

Bonding is used for cosmetic puposes, such as a chipped tooth or discoloration, but it can also be used to fill spaces between teeth or change the shape of a tooth. It can often be used as an alternative to amalgam fillings or to protect some of a tooth's exposed root due to gum recession. It is one of the fastest, easiest and least expensive cosmetic procedures.

Preparation

No preparation is needed for bonding. Anesthesia often is not necessary, unless the bonding is being used to fill a decayed tooth.

The process

teethshadesThe first step of the process is to choose a colour of bonding that best matches the color of the tooth. The dentist will slightly etch the surface of the tooth to roughen it and a conditioning liquid is placed on the tooth. This ensures the bonding sticks to the tooth. The bonding is then placed on the tooth and molded to fit seamlessly to the tooth and to achieve the desired look. The resin must then be hardened by an ultraviolet light or laser and once hardened, it is trimmed, shaped and polished. The whole process takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Combination of procedures

BondingEvery patient will have different needs and wishes when it comes to their teeth. Some patients may benefit more from orthoodontic treatment and others will benefit more from veneers. As shown in the picture, there are some situations where both bonding and veneers are best used together.
