Endodontics (root canal treatment)

What are root canals?

The goal of a root canal is to repair a tooth that is badly infected or decayed. The nerve is removed and the area is cleaned and sealed. Without a root canal the infection can badly affect the tooth and the teeth surrounding it. The pulp, located within the root canal, or nerve tissue can become infected and bacteria can then multiply and create an abscessed tooth, cause swelling of the face, neck or head and bone loss around the root. The root can become infected when there is an untreated crack or chip on the tooth.
